Princess Celestia is a wise old pony who has ruled over Equestria for at least
1000 years though accurate records do not exist to give an exact figure. She
is one of a very rare race of ponies who have both a horn with accompanying
unicorn powers and wings. Her coat is a very light pink like the dawning rays
of the sun and her mane and tail are a very long and flowing blend of the
other colors of the daytime sky. Princess Celestia is very highly educated
and rules over Equestria with justice and mercy however in private she has a
very playful even as some might say, conniving nature.
An emblem of the daytime sun with 8 rays emerging from the rim adorns her
flank symbolizing her responsibility as the bringer of light to Equestria.
Part of that responsibility is literally bringing the sun up to the sky every
morning. She lives in the Grand Palace in Canterlot most of her days studying
ancient texts and managing the affairs of the Principality. Her style of
ruling primarily consists of giving her subjects, whom she sees as friends,
nudges in the direction they need to go to solve their own problems rather
than giving them solutions outright.
It is said that Princess Celestia with her sister Princess Luna have ruled
Equestria since the beginning; Celestia responsible for bringing up the sun
and making the daytime, Luna for bringing the moon during the night time.
This continued for many years until Princess Luna became envious of how the
ponies apparently preferred the day over the night and revolted against
Celestia who responded by using a powerful artifact called the Elements of
Harmony to imprison her in the moon she so loved. Celestia then took over
responsibility for raising the moon as well as the sun. During this time she
encountered Twilight Sparkle who owing to her impressive raw magical ability,
became Celestia's personal protege'. 1000 years later Princess Luna returned
and after her defeat at the hands of Twilight Sparkle and the Elements of
Harmony Celestia promptly forgave her repentant sister and the two continue
living together to this day. Twilight Sparkle, however, chose to live in
Ponyville under the guise of doing research on the magic of friendship and
sends periodic updates to Princess Celestia with her findings.
While the Sun is traditionally associated with light and warmth that grow the
grass and incubate the egg, it is also associated with scorching heat, famine,
and drought. While Celestia has heretofore not displayed any of these traits,
there is no doubt that she must maintain her rule through keeping her enemies
at bay and therefore, these attributes must be periodically displayed if only
to gain the respect of those who would oppose her.
