IC: Chell's class

Postby Chell » Wed Aug 22, 2012 6:30 pm

((OOC note: There's no real need to respond to this... I'm mostly posting it so you get a general idea of what Chell's Thursday Physics class ends up being like. Her Monday Math class won't be terribly different.))

Chell trots into the classroom and looks around the room. She clears her throat, and if she has to speak over the top of foals, she does so, completely ignoring any conversations going on. "Good morning, and welcome to Physics class." She uses telekinesis to write the word "Physics" on the chalkboard. "Physics are the study of the physical world around us... Hence the term, 'physics'." She began writing on the board, complex equations and formulae. As she wrote, she says, "Now, I think a lot of you are kind of young to be studying physics, as you really need a good grounding in a lot of different mathematical fields to fully grasp it, but I think you're old enough to still grasp why it's so awesome... You see, our entire universe is described in numbers. Everything from the stars, the sun that Celestia raises, the moon that Luna raises... When you throw a stone, when you trip and fall to the ground, when you jump in the air... When you fly, if you're a pegasus, or when you use magic, if you're a unicorn... When you dig in the dirt, or when plants grow... When you see a rainbow after a storm... All of it, every last little bit, is described in numbers."

She finally finishes writing out the equations and formulae, then turns back to the class. By now, she figured she'd have most of their attentions. And anypony who wasn't paying attention, well, it was too bad for them. "My name is Chell, and I'll be your teacher for this class and the corresponding math class on Monday. A little bit about myself, I'm a former member of the Ponyville Guard--was heading it for a while... I'm also working with Twilight Sparkle in the community response team, now. I'm also a very good friend of Nightmare Moon's, so I suggest you all pay attention if you don't want to meet her, yourselves..." She winks mischievously. "I'm also going to be competing in the upcoming gymnastics tournament you may have heard about.

"Which brings me to our first topic..." She grins, and moves an empty desk to the front of the room, even as she causes some more chalk to write on the board. "We're going to cover two ideas today, very thoroughly... The first idea dates back to a stallion whose name was Newton. Now he came up with some things that we now all take for granted..." By now, the chalk has finished writing the words "Laws of Motion" on the board. "The Laws of Motion. I'll make it simple for you guys, so you have less to write..." The chalk transcribes quickly as she speaks. "'A body at rest tends to stay at rest.' Take my body, for instance. If I don't exert any effort to move, I will stand right where I am. I don't suddenly start moving willy-nilly around the floor...unless there were ice, or soapy water, or wet moss, or I was on the deck of an old ship on turbulent waters...but in all of those cases, some outside force is interfering with my ability to stay still, so they don't count. All that counts is, when I stand here, I'm stuck, until I start moving. Which brings us to the second part..." The chalk writes out, "A body in motion tends to stay in motion"...as Chell eyes the desk and takes several steps back...

She lunges forward and leaps at the desk, planting her forehooves on it, and launching herself into a double-front-flip, and lands square on her hooves, very close to the wall! She turns to the class, grinning. "When I'm in motion, my body tries to stay in motion. That is, until something--in this case, the floor--comes along and stops me." She points to the equations and formulae on the board. "That's what all that is... The force, or your forward momentum, is equal to your mass multiplied by your acceleration. That's the basis...but it gets a bit more complicated when you add the force of gravity. Now, I've made my weight a variable in all these equations; I'll give extra credit to anypony who figures it out. However, understand that none of you are expected to understand these formulae, so you can all stop sweating." She grins to the class.

"Now, I'm also willing to give the entire class extra credit if I win either of the competitions I'm entering next week, and I'll give more extra credit to anypony who comes out to cheer me on." She winks. "So don't miss it!"

She moves the desk back to its original location. "Alright, there was one other idea we're going to cover today...and that is, 'Terminal Velocity'." She has the chalk write that on the board, as well as the simplified definition. "This is the highest speed at which an object can fall. We all know that gravity exerts force, but so does wind resistance, the mass--or weight--of an object, and how aerodynamic it is..." This word goes on the chalkboard as well. "...or how easily it moves through the air."

She gets into her bags and produces an apple. "Alright. I have here, an apple..." She suddenly opens an orange portal on the ceiling, and a blue portal on the floor. "...and these are portals. My special talent." She grins. "Whatever goes through one portal, comes right out the other...and when I place them like this, and drop the apple straight down..." She does so, holding the apple over the blue portal, and letting go... It begins falling, faster and faster and faster. "The force of gravity makes it constantly speed up as it falls. The air will eventually make it settle so that it's falling in the way that it's most aerodynamic, which is something we'll get to in more detail next week. But eventually, its weight and its shape cause it to be unable to fall aaaaaany faster..." She pauses here, watching as the apple falls. "...which should be right about...now. For an apple, the terminal velocity is at least several hundred feet per second. Almost looks like there's several apples falling now, doesn't it?" She grins. ((OOC note: This is a rough guestimation. I actually have no clue. But assume that whatever she says is correct. ._.; ))

Finally, she looks around the room, grinning wider. "...so, who wants some applesauce?" So saying, she closed the porta--SPLUT! Apple bits sprayed over the entire room.

"Hope you enjoyed the demonstrations," she grins, starting to pass out towels. "Any questions?"

Gardania, who normally tries to sit in the back of the class where she's less likely to be noticed is sitting right up there in the front! When she sees Chell come in she smiles and waves to her, then watches the chalk and blinks at the equations that are being written out and furrows her brow... she doesn't understand this at all! She was going to do so bad in this class, and that meant that she was letting Chell down. She's also having a hard time following what Chell's saying, how can numbers describe everything?

She listens to Chell introduce herself and tilts her head at the Nightmare Moon part, wasn't she a nice pony now?

As soon as Chell finishes her introduction she blinks as she listens and nods a bit, then she blinks again in surprise as Chell launches herself through the air and claps after she lands, that was neat! She also breathes a sigh of relief when she says that they don't have to understand what she wrote, thought thats pretty close to the only there she understood, she has a feeling that this is going to be one of her worst classes, even though she's happy to have her aunt teaching it.

She tilts her head at the terminal velocity part and watches as Chell opens the portals, then she tries to follow the apple with her eyes, but as the speed picks up her eyes start to hurt from trying to keep up and she just watches the blur after that. How ever when she hears Chell ask "Who wants applesauce" she immediately gets what she means and ducks under her desk, though just a bit late and gets apple muk in her mane. She sighs a bit then smiles and gratefully excepts a towel to clean her mane.

Kyubis here too I filly form! She doesn't follow any of what Chell says though and just claps after the flipping part and opens her mouth to catch the applesauce in her mouth! "Yummy!" she says with a smile.

Immelmann.

The quite filly who sat in the furthest corner of the room, not even a having a desk in front of her watched through her goggles. Yep, she was still in her battle gear and looked ready for green week. This lesson on physics was nothing new to her. After all, she has even studied the Coriolis effect when launching large scale projectiles over long distances. However, the portals.. those were new. The filly took a great interest in those.

At the applesauce.. she just wipes off her goggles and continues to watch. This Chell pony, she needed more information of, as she was obviously a protector of the city at one time, and had a powerful weapon at her hooves disposal.

Cascade Spirit listens to Chell's introduction, and grins when Nightmare Moon is mentioned, and the gymnastics tournament. She wonders briefly if Chell knew Seabreeze... As the portal pony continues with her lecture, Cascade takes notes, at least until the applesauce sprayed her notebook, and her face. She wipes her face off with the offered towel, and does the same with her notebook, only to find a great big wet patch covering most of her notes. "Uhoh..." she mutters, before raising a hoof and waiting for Chell to address her.

Octavia sits in the back corner, taking notes in order to learn how to properly teach her own class. One would probably refer to what she does as an extra-curricular activity, but she has no idea what she's doing anyway.
She does not respond to any foals who address her, and pretends she isn't there for the most part, save for the occasional unusual question about Chell's teaching techniques.

Image: Shine was pretty much asleep at a desk, near a wall, her face plastered to a sketch of a robot tree eating an organic tree, before Chell even entered the room, and at hearing numbers her subconscious had determined it was safe to continue as such.
She did however, flick an ear, looking up a little as she heard something break in a squishy manner.
"Buhwaza?" she inquired before blinking some and realising her mother of all ponies was teaching the class.. she made an effort to sit up then but still looked pretty out of it. Wayyy too much number stuff for her liking.

Rave was interested as well and taking down a few things. He'd ducked behind his desk after the spray of apples before blinking a little. "That was unexpected..." He begins cleaning his desk for now.

Turbo was just amazed through the whole lecture. Especially the portals... "Coooooool!" He says mouth agape before getting a face full apple bits. But still... "Cool!" He says while wiping it away.

Welkin Whirl Scribbles in her notebook carefully, listening and trying to do maths, listening more carefully to the physics lecture and trying not to be distracted by the acrobatics... She goes back to scribbling when the apple is brought up...

(( The Terminal velocity of an object is expressed by the equation V_t= \sqrt{\frac{2mg}{\rho A C_d }}. Where Vt, terminal velocity is equal to the Square root of Twice the mass of an object (m) times acceleration due to gravity (g), over the density of the fluid it is traveling through (for air at sea level we use the Greek letter rho), multiplied by the projected area of the falling object (A) and the drag coefficient of the object (Cd), which is determined by the visible shape in the falling direction. At sea level, presuming optimum temperature and dryness, the value for Rho would be approximately 1.225 kg per cubic meter. The average weight of an apple is around 150 grams, so we will convert that to 0.15 kg, and standard gravity (g) (for earth) is abouuut 9.8 meters per second. Presuming the apple to be falling down right side up, the drag coefficient would be somewhere between a sphere and a cone, so let's say 0.49. The projected area of the object. Let's say, the apple is about four inches in diameter, which would come out to 12.5664 square inches, now we convert that to meters for standardized units and we get about 0.0811 if we round up to the fourth digit. So now all we have to do is plug these values in and calculate.

So. We get the Square Root of 2x0.15x9.8 over 1.225x0.0811x0.49, or the Square Root of 2.94 over 0.0487. The square root of 60.3696. Or about 7.7697 m/s. almost 8 meters per second or about 25.9709 feet per second, or, 17.3803 miles per hour. That is around the terminal velocity of the average apple. To contrast, the maximum observed speed of a human skydiver is about 614 Mph. ))

Of course, she just learned how to read so she isn't doing THIS maths, she's just taking down notes and associating the numbers she has been told with apples and folds in space which she correctly recognizes as a 'fold' and not 'holes'. She is, of course. Exceptionally happy to see Jumpy is teaching the class today and does her best to give the teacher the utmost attention as per usual, even if she doesn't REALLY know what's going on, but if she gets hold of the right books it may not be long until she is. She gives a little bit of a giggle at Chell's displays, such an interesting teacher and teached despite what was going on in the room. She blinks, one, and frowns as apple gets all over her notes... and her face. She pouts.

((OOC: Thanks, Variety! Sadly, my ability to manipulate physics is lacking, due to my teacher having been unable to convey the ideas to me in a way that ever stuck. Part of that was due to the fact that I hadn't learned much about manipulating math at that time.))

Chell doesn't mind having Shard in her class...if the guards let her out of the hospital, and further, into a classroom full of foals. To the foals who need it, she apologetically supplies fresh paper, but she doesn't seem to feel *too* bad about that, since she spends the entire rest of the class talking about these two concepts, so everypony--even the students who may have lost notes--has plenty of time and plenty of information with which to take notes.

When Octavia asks her questions, Chell calmly explains, "These are fillies and colts, Octavia. Try to treat them the way you would want to be treated... Respectfully, without talking down to them, and without talking over their heads, either. Just think of yourself like an oversized filly, one who happens to know a bit more than they do about this subject...and with yourself in those horseshoes, figure out how you would convey that information to your smaller friends. You'll reach them much faster if you treat them this way, than if you treat them like miniature adults, and you'll get much better results, too. It's one thing to tell them that Dvorak wrote the New World Symphony when he arrived in Equestria... Get them to care. Make it exciting for them." She smiles.

She responds pretty well to the students' questions, when they have them, and she does seem to explain it like a filly would, if she understood higher math and physics, speaking to them on a basic level without talking down to them. She does apologize especially to the students who seemed most upset over the applesauce incident; Gardania, Cascade, Welkin...anypony else... "Next time I have a messy demonstration, I'll be sure to warn you so you guys can cover your notes better."

As to Shine...she knows the filly is a nocturne. She doesn't badger or try to wake her.

Most of the rest of the class-time is spent answering questions and helping students understand.

Kyubi nods and listens to what Chell says, but if her swirly eyes were any indication, she wasn't understanding a lick of this and she eventually ends up holding her head. "Oooh, somepony tell me when the rides over." @.@

((Welp, it's Monday. Time for math.))

Chell enters the room, greeting the class with a gentle smile. "Morning, class. Welcome to math. Now, we've got a pretty wide age range, here, so we're going to probably be working hard for the first few weeks to get everypony onto the same page. Really, I personally think we should have a math class every day, because we're gonna have to cover a lot of ground.

"Don't forget, I have the gymnastics competition tomorrow night." She grins some at her shameless self-promotion.

"Now, if you have any questions in-class, feel free to ask, any time. We'll spend this week covering the basics: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. I've got some worksheets for you to do, and you'll have two weeks to work on them, because next week, we'll be covering division in more depth. From there...what we do, will depend on how you guys handle it, but I would love to see us start moving on to basic algebra after that. Don't worry, though; if any of you feel like you're struggling with any of it, come find me out of class, and I'd be glad to work with you more in-depthly." She smiles. "But I'm hoping to prove that you guys are some of the smartest foals in Equestria." She winks.

"Any questions, before we start?"

((From there, she basically answers questions, and starts in on the lesson.))

Gardania smiles and waves to Chell as she enters the room and is once again in the front row. She doesn't have any questions, but she feels that she's probably one of the weaker ones in the number area as she didn't do well in the physics class, but she'll try her hardest like always!

Kyubi smiles and glomps Chell "Hi Chell!" she says happily! Then she retreats to her desk and proceeds to try hiding under it and pretending she's not there because last time Chell taught her number things her head was hurting most of the day.

Aisha, despite being one of the earliest to get to class, is also one of the most distracted, bored, and daydreaming. In her typical spot in the darkest corner of the class room, spinning a quill held in her telekinetic grip, she sighs. Physics, she could apply to her magic, make things easier, more difficult, or more interesting. Math? It was so boring and basic! Plus, she couldn't even use her magic to help with it because it's just numbers on paper, not actual items she can grab!

KETCHUP POST!!!

Last Monday and this past Monday's math classes are fairly boring and straightforward, all about basic mathematics--addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. She does what she can to make it more entertaining, but there's only so much she can do. She promises, however, that things will get more interesting once they hit algebra...

Last Thursday's physics lesson was all about aerodynamics. Chell spent a great deal of time talking about wind resistance, surface area, angles, and so forth, and she used her portals a great deal for demonstrations, dropping more objects through them, just like the apple the previous week, to show how wind resistance, shape, mass, and so forth affected an object's aerodynamics. She gave a number of formulae on the subject, but reassured the class they didn't need to know them for the tests--they were there in case any of the foals decided they were curious about such things.

This Thursday's class, Chell brought a pose-able pony toy, with very well-articulated legs, neck, and head. She asked the students to pose the figure into a position they thought would be most aerodynamic, and let the students drop the figure into her portals. Any attempts by students to jump through the portals, themselves, were met by Chell's telekinesis...

Gardania did her best during the classes and when it came time for her to pose the toy she blinked, thinking of the times she and Chell had gone flying and posed the toy as she remembers when Chell goes her fastest through the air and drops it into the portal.

Kyubi blinks at the portals and sooo wants to jump through them! But after seeing a few of the BG students try and get scolded by Chell she pouts a bit and poses the toy in a position that looks like it should put up a lot of wind resistance and drops it into the portal. And then the toy flies out the window! "I didn't do it!" she shouts and flees!

Chell seems distracted in math class, today. It marks the first day she wanted to teach about algebra, but she seems kind of out of it. After catching two mistakes she made in the first half hour of class, she grits her teeth and sets down the chalk. "Okay, I'm sorry. I didn't come to class prepared. Sometimes, grownups make mistakes like that, too. Why don't you all just...take the rest of the class off. You have to stay here in the room, and you can't trash it, but play, read, do homework for other classes, sleep...whatever you want, just be nice." She sinks down into the chair behind the desk with a sigh.

Gardania looks worried when Chell does that and gets up to go check on her, placing a hoof on one of Chell's forelegs and giving her a "Whats wrong?" look.

Kyubi tilts her head when Chell sinks and gets up to go see if she can help, though her approach is a little more direct as she jumps up onto Chell's desk "Whats wrong Chell, not sleep well or something?" she asks tilting her head again.

Kyubi hmms, not quite convinced, but lets it go for now and hugs Chell "Ok!" she says with a smile. Then returns to her desk and starts to play around.

Gardania still looks concerned, but she knows Chell won't talk about it, especially not in class. So she hugs Chell with Kyubi, then returns to her desk and starts to do some math that she knows.
