Site Design Discussion

Postby Barbarella » Tue Mar 18, 2014 1:51 am

This discussion is for any and all things relating to Fillydelphia's layout, formatting, navigation, general design, etc. etc.
Please provide any criticisms, ideas, solutions, problems, and expertise you guys might have.

I don't know anything about Web Design, but I know quite a few of you do.
So get to talking, for that way lies doing.

Well, at just a cursory glance I could say that the image at the bottom of the screen looks a bit blurry. I'm sure with all the HD graphics that are out there these days, we could find something that looks sharper. The same could be said about the Filly logo on the top right.

I know there are a few (more than a few?) who try to use the site on their phones, especially the RP section. Wishful thinking probably, but if we could get a neat responsive site up that would make mobile usage easier, that'd be grand.

Agree, some graphics could use overhauls.

I think the Quick Links on the left side could lose some weight. No one uses Interactive stories. Glossary and Links don't really lead to what you think they'd lead to and DO NOT need to be easily accessed. They should be moved to say, the drop down menu Other or put in the Wiki.

So after talking with Ayame_ExGoddess she came up with some potential designs for a crisper navigation menu.
I put them against the site and took some screenshots.

There are three versions.

Ayame, once again you have proven yourself to be awesome and Shine, they look great pieced together like this. I really dig the first one!

I like Low+Ends (Option 1) personally. I think it looks the nicest and I like the bookends, but I like to keep my messages all the way up on the side.

Since I'm not sure about the whole technical side of all this, I don't know if this is even possible, but maybe it would be nice to have cycling banners/backgrounds, or at least change them once in a while? I'll also offer my help, in case anything has to be done art asset-wise!

I like it.
Also, my sister's letting me use her tablet so I volunteer my art skills as well for any new banners and such that folks may want. Maybe we could put a group shot of a handful of OCs in place of one of the mane6 ones (the logo or the bottom) and rotate out which OCs are featured monthly/bi-monthly?

Cycled/rotated images is not a particularly difficult thing to do but I'm unsure of the purpose of such a thing.

I also think that Cannon characters should be used rather than OC's for the purpose of images in general. The site's general appearance is most important to NEW players not old ones. While I'm sure many would enjoy to see their own character or friend's characters up there it wouldn't help at all to attract and keep new players. Cannon characters are something they already know and pulls the eye.
Not to mention with all the OC's it might be somewhat unfair to have some but not all up there.

I would also like to add that people who are interested in contributing to the effort of graphic and site redesigns should make things and post them so we can see them. There's a lot that can be done and we rely on volunteering and creativity.

I'm trying to think of things to put in the Highlight Box.

The Minecraft Server should stay up, and it is a good place to feature artists, so we should rotate that a bit often.
The other two slides are out-of-date though, and we could easily fit in a third.

Not sure what we could put in there though.
If we ever start running an RPG or something, obviously avoiding the issues we encountered previously, that would be a good place to stick something.
Having a slide for Event stuff is also useful, so we should update that as much as possible.
Maybe highlight OC locations/plots or something?

Not sure about other possibilities, suggestions?

I like the idea of highlighting original locations up there. Say, put up a brief summary of a business and use the image to link to their wiki page or something. Change it every week, to keep it updated, maybe.

I would also like to open discussion on the possibility of a new "logo" of sorts, if desired.

Logo as in an actual logo, or just a new banner? Or whatever the thing at the upper-right corner is. In any case, I'd been thinking about making a few new versions of that, so I could just go ahead and place them here when they're done so you all can see.

If that's now what you mean though, sorry!

I made a quick one. Hopefully better ones to come soon, I was testing grounds, so to say.

@Avarick:
Not bad. Shadows add a nice feel to it.
I would like to think "Rainbows" are rather our thing in terms of Logo, favicon so on. Not to discourage out of the box ideas but maybe try stuff with that and see what turns up.

Honest opinion: I think that logo looks too crowded. The drop shadow clutters the image and makes it look... cheap? Like what sites in the 90s tried to do or something (and is that a glitch shadow just to the right of Rainbow's head?). And the vector/screenshot is covered so much you can barely see anything from it. The basic cursive writing of Fillydelphia (I'd drop the ".com" part) is nice, but I think it could look much better.

I love the new menu. Although I wish there was a way we could sneak a sixth option in there, to balance out the entire case (poor AJ~).

Thanks for the feedback!

It is a glitch shadow! As I said, I put it together just to test how something like that would look, so I didn't bother to remove that, to be honest. I was thinking of dropping the '.com' too. I'll try new images in the future to see what I can come up with, and of course it'd be nice to see other people try their skills out there too!

Neither did I!

I do think a new/polished site logo and icon would be something nice to have, anyway.

You're all terrible. I'm just saying that if the image cuts off like that it should go behind something not stick out in front.
