Weather system in chat

Postby Mayday » Thu Sep 08, 2011 6:23 pm

Anyway, we are going to add a weather system in that chat soon! See this for an example of what we will be seeing.

Basically, we will have regular weather (clear) and then depends on setting, precentage of changes it will go into the next one. So normally, it is random, unless a Pegasus on the weather team want to interfere, then they would set a weather and then it will go back to clear and then find the fastest path on that graph to go to the scheduled weather. Unless they want it /right now/. Like how :rainbowgoggles: clear the cloud and turn it back to sunny sky in 10 second flat.

Here is what help I will need. We have tons of weather that could use some descriptions... like, for example:

When it start to Drizzle:
The air, while thick with humidity. Along with Cloud gathering at the sky, indicates that Rain is about to start

When it start to rain:
The clouds are closing in, thick and groomy, seem like whatever rain it is, it will be a big one

When it is raining:
The rain is pouring down quite heavily, most pony will have to look for cover or they will be drenched from head to hoof in 10 seconds fat

We have a huge list of description that we will need to make. And also, feel free to suggest more weather so I can edits them and add them together! Here is a list!

  • Starting to Drizzle
  • Drizzle
  • Rain stopping
  • Starting to rain
  • Raining heavily
  • Rain stopping
  • Starting to Snow
  • Snowing
  • Snow Stopping
  • Storm starting
  • Storming
  • Storm stopping
  • Starting thunder
  • Thundering
  • Thunder stopping
  • Thunderstorm is starting
  • Thunderstorm is going on
  • Thunderstorm is stopping
  • Becoming cloudy
  • Cloud is going away

Etc.

Of course, we don't want to description too be way too long, but doesn't really matter, any material is helpful. Also any suggestion will be helpful, too! However I have a feeling it will be hard to suggest without seeing how it works first. So no worries! :twilightsmile:

Hail!

Postby Shinula » Thu Sep 08, 2011 7:42 pm

Not a meteorologist, but apparently hail comes from thunderclouds. I suppose these 'events' would branch off as such.

Hail!

[1] Starting to hail:
The skies rumble, as here and there, small lumps of ice begin to fall, bouncing off the ground a few times before settling. Looks like it's about to hail. Fortunately the stones are not large enough to cause anypony serious harm, but it would be best to get to cover all the same.

[2] Actively hailing (Note: Used 'surrounding surfaces' rather than 'building rooftops', and the vague 'fragile aspects' as some areas may not have buildings. Replace if applicable.)
More and more lumps of ice fall, clattering loudly against the ground and surroudning surfaces, some shattering, some bouncing, some damaging fragile aspects of the environment. Anypony caught out in the downfall might find themselves being pelted with ice, but sting as it might, it wouldn't be enough to cause any permanent harm.

[3] Hail ending
The hail storm begins to ease up, the falling ice becoming less and less frequent. Eventually the ground is left covered, in a layer of small lumps and shards of ice, causing the ground to become somewhat hazardous to walk on.

Improvement on descriptions welcome!

Well they come from the same TYPE of cloud, but require different conditions. Thunder requires a low-humidity high dust environment to generate the static charge. Hail requires a high-humidity low dust environment to form ice crystals. Dust keeps it from freezing, humidity keeps it from building a static charge.

@Whiteeyes: Is that so? Well now I know!
However, Ponyville weather is controlled by pegasus ponies. It was just a suggestion for the paths in the flowchart.

[1] Thunderstorm is starting
The sky is split by a forked tongue of lightning, visible across the darkened clouds. The sound of a mighty rumble hits four seconds later, telling that a thunderstorm is still high in the sky and coming. The dry heat coming from from the clouds pulling up any vapor and making the area slightly humid for all ponies. Two more rumbles coming after another flash.

[2] Thunderstorm is going on
The sky rumbles, the light a dancing cascade of lightning high in the sky. Each crash and subsequent rumble sounding across the town. It's heard for miles around as an echo. The superheated air causing the wind to be heated. The light show above destroying temporary night vision but showing the area in clarity.

[3] Thunderstorm is stopping
The sky is calming down rapidly, slowly dissipating the largest of the clouds as it's energy rolls. The humidity of the clouds is finally scattered too much to keep together. The last shocks through the air giving one last powerful rumble before the air goes calm.

Oh, I am so on board with this.

[1] Windstorm is starting. You hear a rustling in the distance. It's getting closer.

[2] Windstorm is going on. You are blasted by a sudden gust of wind. Pegasus ponies will have to fly twice as fast to move against the wind but fly twice as fast going with it. Any items left outside will be blown around.

[3] Windstorm is stopping. Almost as suddenly as it came, the windstorm ceases leaving leaves and litter strewn all over.

How will this be implemented in the chat?

Will there be like a computer script that will pop up a message about the weather at random times, or will whichever moderator is in chat room set the weather?

How do the percentages figure in? Like a chat room die roll if the weather is set by the moderator?

Both! A computer scripts will automatically determines the weather in a weighted randomness both on type of weather and duration (not show on chart). However when a weather pony is around they can changes it as well.

It will be automatically determined by the system. There are no intervention needed for the weather to start rotating.

Too quote one of Skyblaze's catch phrases (huh... that rhymes... ) "The weather doesn't just happen!"

Perhaps we should put references to Pegasus ponies actually making the weather change? As they are now, the descriptions seem to suggest that the weather is changing on its own.

For example, for rain ending, "The weather team is now working to break up the clouds, slowing the rain to a drizzle."

* Starting to Drizzle
Spatters of moisture begin to land on your back and all around. Still too small to make much sound, you feel the wet spots but by the time you look, they are gone. It is a most refreshing feeling accompanied by the wonderful clean smell of fresh air.
* Drizzle
The spattering increases in frequency but remains silent. You feel your coat and mane very gradually collecting water but never getting truly 'wet'. Objects left out int he rain appear speckled with little bumps of moisture and a beautiful rainbow shines majestically over the whole scene.
* Drizzle stopping
The beautiful rainbow begins to vanish as the mist of water is taken away by a light breeze.
* Starting to rain
The Pegasus weather team makes a team hop upon the dark and laden rain clouds and in moments, the air is full of water as they begin to empty their soggy loads onto the scenery below. The homes become shiny with a layer of liquid and rivulets of runoff join each other as they head toward the nearest river or lake to help fill them back up. Flying will be very difficult underneath the clouds.
* Raining heavily
The rainclouds seem to tear themselves open as the rain worsens. Flight beneath the clouds becomes impossible as buckets of water pour down drenching everything outside and making a terrible din. Speech outside will require raised voices or shouting. The rivers begin to swell and the lake begins to grow outside its normal boundary. The streets are filled with thick mud.
* Rain stopping
The steady drone of raindrops begins to lighten and become intermittent as the rain clouds become transparent and begin to break up. The sun shining through the cracks in the cover reveals a beautiful rainbow smiling over Ponyville. The streets are muddy and difficult to traverse.
* Starting to Snow
Pegasus weather teams can be seen high above Ponyville carrying specialized saddlebags each containing hundreds upon hundreds of delicate crystalline snowflakes. They fly a pattern over the town gently releasing them to flutter daintily to the ground. Other Pegasus Ponies follow shortly afterward with frozen water clouds and begin to fill the sky.
* Snowing
The Pegasus weather dash through the frozen water clouds making them burst into millions of tiny snowflakes that fall and begin to cover the ground, buildings, and everything left outside! The streets become difficult to travel in and it gets very cold.
* Snow Stopping
The Pegasus weather teams get their call ending their work. They smash the last few frozen clouds to powder and fly away back to Cloudsdale for a much deserved break.

Becoming Cloudy:
The sun is beaming down brightly on another warm day. Peaceful, fluffy clouds can be seen on the horizon, approaching slowly through the sky.

Partially Cloudy:
Shadows list lazily across the ground as the white clouds move briskly up above in the light breeze. Sunlight spears between them, offering turns of cool shade and warm light.

Cloudy:
The air is cool and humid outside, covered in the shade of the clouds up above. A hint of light can be seen through the cover where the sun should be.

Clouds Leaving:
Beams of light begin to open up through the clouds, warming up the earth below. The cloud cover starts to break and not far off, bright, sunny skies can be seen approaching.

I'm pretty sure ponies know weather does not just happen. But it is still a very complicated system that Pegasus can't do whatever they want and it still have element of surprise and randomness to it. So it is ok to be unpredictable.

As for making the system look like Pegasus are constantly working. I am indifferent really. As show in the show, sometime weather just appears to happen even though Pegasus is obviously working in the background. Like in ticket master. While weather Pegasus are in the know, other ponies are totally caught by surprises and the fact that pegasus are working in the background are not apparent until Rainbow opened a hole for Twilight.

Sleet is Beginning - It seems things have gotten a bit too cold, and what would be a drizzle has begun to freeze on the way down. Little pellets of ice are starting to hit the ground and it seems that things will be getting a bit treacherous out there soon. The Weather Team is working to correct this problem.

Sleet is Falling - Little beads of ice are cascading down from the sky, covering everything with a fine sprinkling of cold glass. The prospects of going outside right now are somewhat unappealing and the crinkling sound of the little pellets of frozen water can be heard on every roof and window. Of course, those that fly have it even worse and the cold barrage is even more painful for the Pegasi in the air now. Staying inside is highly recommended.

Sleet is Ending - The Local Weather Team seems to have gotten things under control and the rain of glass is slowly beginning to return to more normalized precipitation. The ice on the ground might be problematic for a few moments, but any subsequent precipitation should take care of that quickly enough.

Tornado Watch - One of the thunderstorms appears to be getting a bit rowdy, and it appears to be boiling over underneath as the thunderhead gets more and more agitated. It is advised that all ponies stay indoors until this is sorted out; The Weather Team is working to correct this problem.

Tornado Warning - A long, snakelike tendril can be seen starting to descend from the rogue thunderhead as it continues to loom over the countryside. Pegasi can be seen attempting to corral it back into the cloud, but those caught by its angry grasp are quickly flung away at high speed. Somewhere in Ponyville, a guard begins sounds the alarm and a forlorn siren begins to wail over the town.

Tornado on Ground - The funnel has touched down and is starting to wreak havoc on the countryside, picking up branches, trees and rocks; displacing animals and disturbing anything in its path. All ponies are advised to take shelter immediately! Get to the lowest part of your abode and cover yourself with anything that you can as quickly as possible. This is not a drill. This is an actual emergency! The Weather Team is working to correct this problem as swiftly as possible.

Tornado Dissipated - The funnel has dissipated and the Weather Team has succeeded in calming the thunderstorm. The low, appeased rumbling of the thunderhead rolls overhead, but the winds have died down and the sirens have stopped. Clean-up crews are already being dispatched to assist with the relief efforts...

Thin Fog- The humid air has not dissipated, but it's too warm for more than a slight mix of ground hugging clouds to slightly obscure the air around. Visibility is slightly effected.

Thick Fog- A soup has rolled in and covered the area in a very dense cloud cover. The clouds are so thin that it's difficult for the pegasi to do more than make paths through the area to make it safer for ponies to travel around. Keep a lantern or candle at the ready during these times of thick fog!

Zero Visibility Fog- This fog is so thick that the pegasi can barely get through the top layer of it without making it thick enough to cause a walk in 'shower' temporarily! Ponies are warned to make sure they have something to see through the fog.

Fog is thinning- The warm air and sunshine has pulled the fog off the ground slightly, making it less hazardous for ponies to get around.

Fog is gone- The fog has fully receded, allowing ponies to continue their normal routines.

Quick thing, there's a typo in the portion where the fog is rolling in, it's humidity, not humility.

Copied from Chat:

Everypony knows that moisture + humility = fog. Every time a young painter living by the coast realizes he'll never be the next big artist, the fog rolls right in. That's why it's so foggy in New York and San Francisco. XD

It is fixed.

Also I am going to turn the frequency of the weather lower so it become a fairly rare thing until pegasui who controls weather is around. After the discordant thing we are likely going to arrange official weather team who actually can control weather in the chat like in the show.

Some updates: Added Sleet and some icon thanks for the chat team! Trying to fine tune it more so rare weather are going to be a bit more rare. Until Pegasi starting to fuss with the weather, it will be just mostly rain -> cloudy -> dizzle -> clear.

See this for the updated graph. Still looking for icon for Hail and Fog, then again. I guess Sleet can do as Hail for now. http://fillydelphia.com/chat/img/weather_graph.jpg
