'But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
'Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: 'we're all mad here.'

It doesn't mean it's not there somewhere. Even the map says it isn't to scale. It's like one of those souvenir novelty art maps. But what it does do is give us the general layout of Equestria, directions, and even a few new canon locations. We now know, for instance, that Appleoosa is south of Ponyville, not west, and that the griffons come from some place beyond the eastern sea.

A fan-drawn version of the map, with wording that's a bit more legible.

I think so! We can figure out where to put fanon locations as needed.

I say we switch over myself. But I'd also add that it shouldn't invalidate fanon cities either.
And to expound on this, the scale really is a bit wonky, since we know Appleloosa is at (the very) least a whole day's trip by train. But then again, this is a cartoon after all.

That's certainly true about the scale, because on that map, the White Tail Wood seems to be at least as far away as Appleoosa, when in the show it was fairly close to Ponyville.
So, the scale is definitely off, but at least now we know where things are in relation to Ponyville.
I think of that map is being like those cartoony maps of the US like you'd find on restaurant placemats and stuff. You can't really use it to navigate, but you can at least see where things are.

This EQD link has a much better version of the original map:

And for the first time I noticed a place called Hollow Shades. I wonder what that is? Some place in Season 3 perhaps?

Here is a good, 300 dpi scan of the map:

Also... I think I have a solution to the Trottingham problem.
Looking at the map, all of the parody place names are based on cities that are in the US and Canada only. With that knowledge, it makes sense that Trottingham isn't there. It's on an island over the eastern sea -- the pony equivalent of the British isles (maybe... the BITish Isles?). THAT is where Trottingham is, with the other pseduo-British lands like Scoltland and Sireland (a name I just came up with... aka SIRE, a farm term).
And what of Hoofington? Assuming its a parody of Washington, DC., well, maybe we can place it near Baltimare, just like the real Washington. Since Canterlot is the capitol city, Hoofington doesn't need to be as prominent as it is in our world. Perhaps its an incorporated town or suburb of Baltimare?
I know won't calm the wailing and gnashing of teeth in the greater hyperreactive pony fans, but, for our little community, it might be a good compromise.
What do you guys think?
